The Pearl Elearah Chronicles Book 1 eBook Sandra Martinez Simone Beaudelaire Reviews
I was fortunate to read Pearl as a beta reader. It is a genre far different than my usual choice of suspense or mystery, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out this book contained both. The world is richly described and the characters jump off the page. You enter a world that is so vivid, you easily lose track of time. Be prepared to not get anything else done. I look forward to the story continuing. Thank you for introducing me to a new favorite.
The Pearl engaged me right from the start. It tells the tale of a group of travelers, some of whom are gods, who are caught up in a battle against an evil and manipulative enemy. I agree with previous reviews that it has a extensive mix of fantastic figures such as dragons, vampires, gods, mermaids etc.
Ms Martinez has a great imagination and has developed a good plot and storyline. It keeps the reader engaged right to the end. The difficulty with the work is its English and the mix of contemporary dialogue in a medieval-type setting. I believe the work needs another edit to clear away some of these barriers from making it a great novel.
I was asked to beta read this fantasy, and I loved every second. Ms. Martinez has a wonderful imagination AND a great skill for research. The blend of history and fantasy is glorious. This book really has something for everyone.
Do you like fantasy? The Pearl has dragons, vampires, shape shifters, disembodied spirits, wizards, mermaids, and even a god that can stop time.
Do you like romance? The sweet, poignant relationship between Mika and Elie is heartwarming... and clean. No graphic sexual content.
Do you like action? How about massive battle scenes?
Do you like political thrillers? The interaction between kings, princes and advisers is intense.
I mean, really, just read "The Pearl". No matter what you like, it's probably in there, with great storytelling that just grabs you by the throat from page one and never lets go.
Can't wait for the next installment.
This is the first book of Elearah Chronicles. I was gifted the second one, Almost a Goddess, and was hooked enough to come back and get this one.
As in Almost a Goddess, mythological creatures breathe and move in this world together with normal people, and the landscape pulls you right in.
This book sounds more lyrical than the other one. Maybe it is because it is the first one, or it might be related with the cities lighted--I can't say much of this, because it would be a spoiler.
There is also a creation myth that seems to be the backbone of the series, and something like an explanation of the magical system.
Both books do stand alone, but together they make an interesting set. I wonder now what will happen in the third one. I hope I don't have to wait long to find out.
I enjoyed reading this story. To me it felt like a blend of Tolkien, Merlin and Robin Hood. That's the affect it has. It comes across as an important piece of ancient folklore. Many of the descriptions of both the characters and settings are vibrant and immediately suggest peculiar and eerie happenings are in store. The author uses a certain phraseology that is reminiscent of the type of storytelling that gets passed down through the ages with the use of spoken words only.
I don't want to give too much away so I'll just say it's about a band of travelers that experience wild, wicked and wonderful adventures. Without a doubt the reader continues to be driven to want to know more, to understand the mission. Some of the travelers have powers well beyond those of mortals. It soon became apparent to me that the author has a splendid knack for blending cosmology with mythology.
There is a male lead and of course, a female, a beautiful and alluring female. Right from the start the reader is aware of their mutual interest. This soon develops into a palpable, yet subtle sexual tension. And although through much of the story this was not the main focus of the tale, I must admit it's where my interest stayed. Despite all the main story line action I kept wanting to know where this little boy - girl thing was going.
As the group makes its way to their ultimate destination their plans suddenly change. That's as far as I'll go. Needless to say this is where the adventure really takes off.
As interesting and unique as this story was for me there is something I feel could have made it smoother. That was the character names. I've never seen anything like them and found it a bit of a challenge at times getting them all straight in my head. This resolved itself as the story unfolded though I would have appreciated the author giving a bit of background info about the players up front and a hint of who was who and what they were up to sooner. I think the names would have stuck with me easier if I'd had something to relate them to.
By no means was this a deal breaker as there is plenty happening to keep the reader engaged and wanting to know what comes next. I think anyone into mythology and adventure will truly enjoy this story.
