Will she survive the night?

Lily works the night shift at a radio station, taking calls from forlorn and damaged souls who can't sleep. She knows their pain and they find solace in her comforting words. The city is ruthless; nameless creatures roam the streets and prey on the lost and innocent.

As she leaves work one night at the crest of dawn, Lily comes face-to-face with depravity. She is a survivor at heart, but she is unfairly outnumbered and surrenders to her fate. From the shadows an ally emerges, the mysterious and alluring, Wolf. After coming to Lily's aid, he takes her to shelter.

The immediate danger has passed, but the incident is far from over. Wolf tells Lily she is not prey, and sets off into the night with her by his side to set a wrong right. What she sees when entering the dark heart of the city will change her existence forever. Has Wolf taken on a force too big? Will Lily survive the night?

Prey A Vampire Paranormal Romance Predator Prey Book 1 edition by James D Horton Paranormal Romance eBooks

Predator & Prey is a short supernatural story about a woman whose suspicions are fearfully confirmed and I'll keep this review brief, to eliminate any chance of spoilers. There's really only one thing I want to share, and it's the quality of the writing.

The book is written in first person, present tense and the author has hit a home run. The prose is lyrical, no sentence is wasted and I found myself reading slowly at first, enjoying the tempo. But since I'm such a glutton for a good read, after a few pages I devoured the entire thing without coming up for air. The scenes are perfectly painted and the characters and dialogue become something real because of it.

Hands down, one of the best shorts I've read all year. I absolutely cannot wait to read more of Horton's work. Captivating, five stars all the way.

Prey A Vampire Paranormal Romance Predator Prey Book 1 edition by James D Horton Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

Good, but too short to draw me in enough to invest in the rest of the saga.
I enjoyed this very short less than fifty page paranormal shifter story. It's too bad that the entire book wasn't sold has I do not enjoy short cliff hanger stories. Hopefully, the rest of this book or series offers more than fifty pages per so called book.
The idea that a radio jockey would delve into the mysterious world of vampires and the supernatural is an interesting one. There's a lot to play around with there. Unfortunately, that initial premise is hampered greatly by over reliance of worn tropes, such as being almost raped and then being saved by Mr. Dark & Broody. Additionally, the characterization was very stilted and the writing itself was rather weak. I think a lot of this was brought on by the author's splitting several books up rather than making one cohesive novel. It made everything seem overtly convoluted and forced.
Lily has lived her life the only way she knows how, by doing whatever it takes to get by. She knows she lives in a world where nightmares stalk the dark but everyone turns a blind eye. Through her radio show she tries to comfort those who have seen the darkness that dwells in the city. Wolf has fallen for the radio personality. Much to her detriment because of wolf’s interest in her she is soon the hunted. Wolf steps in and saves her. Now she has a choice remain with the label of prey or reinvent herself alongside her hero and become a predator.
This is not badly written, but it leaves the reader with more questions, than anything else. Unfortunately, it didn't grab my attention well enough to want to get the next book, to see if there were any answers. Perhaps because I was just reading an 'Anita Blake' book, it felt like an unfortunate mix of that & 'Twilight', but not as good. I think Jim is a better writer than this appeared to be, but the style is as if he's telling the story in first person, but not really his story. I was glad I had found this as a free ebook, because I would have been really disappointed with it if I'd paid very much for it. While the feeling that this was more aptly a prologue for the rest of the series may have simply been a marketing strategy, there just wasn't enough to draw me in for the rest of the series. (
While some authors lighten the mood of their books, Horton here does not. He keeps an even pace, keeps it dark, and keeps it beautiful/sweet. There also appears to be a different approach to the average fantasy story, where there's more of the "show" of the ownership of a mate, versus the alpha bond. Strangely he incorporates this bond into the vampire world. I'll definitely be reading the sequel, I don't care about the darkness, but I do hope he keeps it sweet.

Only one MAJOR complaint. What in the world is up with the cover, sure that's Lynx, but there's no way that's Wolf.
In Predator & Prey Lily's voice is strong and captivating, I was hooked instantly! I was no doubt in a trance as she talked about the world she lived in. And then we got to see first hand how truly bad it is as she leaves her job late at night and a gang of guys surround her, I felt the intensity and her will to fight back even though the odds weren't in her favor. Certainty a sitting on the edge moment!

And then a blurred hero comes and saves her, which we find out later was the reason why the men attacked her. The story becomes even more intriguing as Lily follows a man name Wolf, who has a couple of fangs and only lives when it's dark, and learns more about the beast that haunt the night. It was interesting to read how her town knows about the going ons at night but chooses to ignore it all, which makes me wonder how this all started, I'm hoping in the next book we'll be able to learn this. That's the only thing I think was missing, we don't really know when this is taking place (the present or future or even what big city Lily lives in or really how the vampires came to be in this world and how did the residence became okay with knowing about them) these things I question and hopefully we'll be able to get an answer for them in the next two books.

Overall this was a fun and interesting world to fall into. I fell hard, I read it in one sitting and I did not want to do anything but read this short story! It was a unique world and I found this to be very original, I haven't read many vampire books in a while so it was nice to fall back into their kind of world. The only other thing that helped me rate this a four instead of a five was that some of the dialogue felt a little cheesy, especially this one scene when the two characters first stepped foot into the woods and they had a Belle and Edward moment. "Say it" "Vampire" you know what scene I'm talking about, that's kinda what it felt like when Wolf explained what he was to Lily haha. But other than that, I truly liked the book and would love to read the next ones! I'm glad to see that they're longer!
